McHenry, Mary Williamson Murphy, 1933-; College professor of English. Mount Holyoke College graduate, 1954. Papers contain correspondence, writings and speeches, course records, yearbooks, calendars and planners, subject files, family papers, biographical information, memorabilia, photographs, and a scrapbook. Materials primarily document her academic and social activities as an African-American student and teacher at the Oakwood Friends School, Mount Holyoke College, Columbia University, George Washington University, Howard University, and Federal City College (now the University of the District of Columbia). Correspondence includes letters describing her experiences in a summer program in France in 1950 (when she also visited Ireland) and letters from her first and second husbands, Harry Saunders Murphy, Jr. and Donald F. McHenry. Writings include her proof reading corrections to the manuscript of "The World According to Garp" by John Irving (at that time, a colleague at Mount Holyoke College). Other materials relate to her personal life and to members of the Williamson and McHenry families and their relatives.
